Breastfeeding – the first three months~

For this breastfeeding update we will go over the first 3 months of this journey.

I will start at Sanderson’s 48 hour appointment.  Night before this appointment Sanderson woke up and cried for hours , only settled right before leaving for this appointment , so I knew something was wrong. Once at there as the doctor was getting his height and weight my husband and I were shocked to hear he was only 4 lbs 13 oz , I remember we both looked at each other and it made the doctor check his weight from birth. She of course panicked and decided that he lost too much weight, We were told the hospital let me leave too soon as a first time mom and that my milk hadn’t come in yet. We got similac to supplement with until my milk came in . I had to feed him for at least 20 minutes of active nursing on both sides , then offer him the 2oz bottle of formula and then pump for another 20-30 minutes and could offer him the milk I pumped. This started as soon as we left the doctors office.  My milk started coming in halfway through that day , not much I think I got maybe half an ounce to an ounce while pumping on both sides. His 48 hour appointment was on Sunday and we had another one to check his weight that Thursday. He had already gone back up to 5lbs 3oz almost his birth weight. We had another follow up the next week and he gained another pound and was 6lbs 3oz . By then I was getting 2oz pumping I believe. Which for a newborn is enough. I have had just enough since then I think I pumped enough to have 6-7 frozen bags of around 4-6 ounces (he ended up being 7.5 pounds be the end of that month. ) We also had some issues making sure he was latched correctly , so a majority of the month I was sore and even cracked a few times. (I believe this is due to him being so small and my breasts are rather large so it was hard finding a good position for him)

His second month is when it became easier . He weighed in at  10 pounds even and his latch was so much better , he however started nursing for an hour to an hour and 15 minutes a session , he was never a fast nurser in the beginning but this was about 20-30 minutes longer than he was nursing at first. He also went back to nursing every hour and a half or so instead of the 3-4 he had started at the end of his first month. Which ended two weeks or so after it started so I believe it was just a growth spurt.

Now –

His latch is completely fine , he is nursing every 2 hours or 2 and half during the day and has started sleeping 5-6 hours before waking around 2-3 am then going back to sleep until 6-7 am . He still takes around 40 minutes to an hour to nurse, but since that’s normal for him I believe he’s just a slower eater. I have built up a large supply since the beginning of October by using the silicone hand pumps to catch let downs during nursing . And I believe he is around 11.5 or more pounds now. I have however started cutting down on dairy to see if it helps with gas since he has had tons of stomach aches since birth and it has been an issue. (small update on that , it has seemed to have gotten a lot better in the last few weeks since switching to almond milk and not eating much yogurt. )

Thank you so much for reading!
